So it’s been a little while since we’ve all gotten together…  and the last few times we met, there was pretty low turnout.

Is it a coincidence that it started dropping off once I suggested that we read a book together?  I’ve been wondering if maybe that was a bad idea.

I remember the first couple times we met, there was this great energy just from getting together with new people, sharing about our lives and the things that were on our minds.

I’m wondering if maybe that’s more what people want/need, rather than to dive into a book together?

There’s totally no pressure to be a part of this Cohort; it exists solely as a safe place for people to talk about things that matter.  So, when I say that I would LOVE it for more people to come out, it’s because I see value in those conversations, for me, and I want to make a place for that to happen for other people if they’re interested.  Not because I’m trying to guilt/force people into “committing” to another thing they “have to” show up to.  😉

So, think back to the first couple times we met, when we just shared out thoughts and experiences, and let the conversations take us where they naturally went…  Is that something you’d like to be a part of again?

Well, it seems that this week is no good for anyone, at least according to the Facebook event I created…

So rather than sit alone at Starbucks tomorrow night, I’ve decided to push it off a week.  🙂

See the revised info below; I’ll create a new Facebook event as well:

Next Cohort meeting (#7)

Pick a Date: Wednesday, 4/23 or Thursday, 4/24 Thursday, 5/1
Time: 8pm-11pm
Location: Starbucks in Latham on Route 2 (549 Troy Schenectady Rd Latham, NY)
Bring/Read: Chapter 5 of A Generous Orthodoxy (there’s a lot to chew on with this one, so one chapter should be plenty)

UPDATE: Well, not much response.  So, I’ve picked the date.  Thursday, 4/24 it is!

——

It’s time to meet again!

Last time there were only 2 of us… It was still a great time, but obviously, the more the merrier.

So for this time, I’m bringing democracy back and letting everyone vote for which day to meet. Here’s my proposal:

Next Cohort meeting (#7)

Pick a Date: Wednesday, 4/23 or Thursday, 4/24
Time: 8pm-11pm
Location: Starbucks in Latham on Route 2 (549 Troy Schenectady Rd Latham, NY)
Bring/Read: Chapter 5 of A Generous Orthodoxy (there’s a lot to chew on with this one, so one chapter should be plenty)

Leave a comment with your vote for the day, and we’ll meet on whichever one seems to work for the most people.

Looking forward to seeing you all again.

We had a great time last meeting, discussing a bit of the first 2 chapters of A Generous Orthodoxy, but really just enjoying where the conversation branched out to from there.

I think that it was good to have a place to start (the book), but also good to not be dogmatic about it as a true “book study”, and instead to just use the book as a catalyst to discuss and learn with/from each other.

Here’s what I’m thinking for next time, hope you can make it!

Next Cohort meeting (#6)

Date: Wednesday, 4/2
Time: 8pm-11pm
Location: Starbucks in Latham on Route 2 ( 549 Troy Schenectady Rd Latham, NY )
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=549+Troy+Schenectady+Rd%2C+Latham%2C+NY
Bring/Read: Chapters 3 & 4 of A Generous Orthodoxy (PLEASE, by all means, come even if you haven’t read it!!!)

Also, please let me know if you’re not on the email list, and you’d like to be. You can either join it using the Google Groups button near the Top-Right of this page, or just leave a comment here with your email address and I can directly add you to it.

See you in a few weeks!

This is just a reminder about our next meeting, coming up next week.

Next Cohort meeting (#5)

Date: Wednesday, 3/12
Time: 8pm-11pm
Location: Starbucks in Latham on Route 2 ( 549 Troy Schenectady Rd Latham, NY )
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=549+Troy+Schenectady+Rd%2C+Latham%2C+NY
Bring: A Generous Orthodoxy

See the last post for details on how much of the book to read before the meeting. And even if you didn’t read it, or didn’t get it yet, come on out anyways!

It’s more about the conversation than anything else, and the book is just a catalyst for the conversation.

See you all there!

In the last post, I announced that we’re going to try reading/discussing a book together: Brian McLaren’s A Generous Orthodoxy. I also said that I would follow up with more details on how much we should have read by the next meeting.

Let’s try to get through the first two chapters before the meeting:

Chapter 1: The Seven Jesuses I Have Known

Chapter 2: Jesus and Gob B

(If you’d like to read the Foreword, Introduction and “Chapter 0” as well, that’s fine too, but you’re free to skip over them and just get to the main Chapters if you’d like)

Feel free to start the discussion here in the comments if you have any thoughts before the meeting!

We had a great meeting Wednesday night, getting to know some new friends and chatting about whatever was on our minds.

But I think it’s time to get serious now. No more fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants meetings. Let’s get down to business.

Or something like that. Anyways…

We’re going to start reading a book together! And the one we decided on is a (somewhat) oldie but a goodie:

Brian McLaren’s A Generous Orthodoxy

A few of us have read it already, a few of us haven’t, but either way I think the discussions that we’ll have surrounding the topics brought up in this excellent book will be beneficial to everyone involved.

I’ll follow up with more details on how much we should have read by next meeting, but the first chapter is probably a good place to start. And if you’d like to buy it through Amazon (the link above) and save a couple bucks on shipping, let me know, because I can get free shipping.

And speaking of the next meeting, I’m going to do something unprecedented and announce the date of the next meeting way ahead of time!!! Let’s see if that works for us, and we can always go back to the democratic method next time if it seems to work better.

Next Cohort meeting – #5

Date: Wednesday, 3/12
Time: 8pm-11pm
Location: Starbucks in Latham on Route 2 ( 549 Troy Schenectady Rd Latham, NY )

Bring: A Generous Orthodoxy
